Located in the South-western corner of Costa Rica on the Pacific Coast, this 5-star wilderness lodge is possibly the best of its kind in Central America. The operation is US owned and managed, whilst also employing local staff and re-investing money into the local community for education and work opportunities.

After a huge buffet breakfast each morning consisting of local cuisines, American and European foods, it’s a 2 minute stroll through the gardens to the dock, where the fleet of 35 boats, both inshore and offshore, await for the days fishing. The guiding operation is run by legendary head guide Todd Staley who co-ordinates with each guest the night before explaining who their guide/skipper will be and what they can expect from the day ahead.

The variety of fishing terrain is what makes Crocodile so special, the sheltered Panduce Bay where the fleet is moored acts a breeding ground for acres of baitfish from sardines to blue runners, and the day usually begins catching live bait or casting at small schooling Tuna and Rooster fish. The target species for a days inshore fishing are Roosters! These colossal fighting fish make their homes along the surf shoreline and close to reef drop-offs and trawling with live bait only 20 metres from shore is the preferred method – although schooling Roosters will take lure and fly. Other inshore species include large Jacks, Snapper, Barracuda and the odd Sailfish has been caught right off the beach.

Black Marlin, massive Yellow Fin tuna, Maui Maui, Wahoo and some of the biggest Dorado in Central America head up the target list in the blue water. With the majority of the year seeing little to no swell, a days fishing off the coast in one the decked out “Strike” game boats is a high-light. A quick check on the Crocodile Bay website at the daily fishing reports will prove how productive this fishery is.

At the end of the day as with any good fishing holiday, a cold beer in the bar and games room amongst fellow fish seekers telling stories of the days battles pre-seeds an exquisite array of foods in the restaurant. The daily catch of Maui Maui, Dorado and Tuna accompany salads, steaks, local foods, pastas and of course a selection of tasty desserts. You don’t go hungry at Crocodile!!!

Another great aspect of the lodge is the eco-tour operation, available for all guests and organized the night before. The Rainforests and National Parks in the area are some the best preserved wilderness areas in Central America and eco-tours ranging from tranquil walks through the forest with monkey’s and gentle kayaks through the mangrove lined rivers, to the more adventurous waterfall rappelling and surfing tours are all on offer.
