Made famous by the fishing series “A River Somewhere”, Los Roques is a Bonefish, Snook and Tarpon paradise. A short 30 minute flight from Venezuela’s capital Caracas, lands you in this pristine national park and marine reserve. The quaint little fishing village on Gran Roque, the largest of more than 300 Islands that make up Los Roques, is a colourful sleepy fishing village where you will notice a lack of resorts or any structures over 2 storeys.

The beaches of Los Roques are amongst the best in the world, with brilliant white sands and tourquoise water, the non-fisho can enjoy days relaxing with a book, snorkel, packed lunch and essential umbrella provided by all the Posadas on Gran Roque. Each day scuba and day trips leave around 9.00am after breakfast and return at 4.00pm. There are over 40 locations to visit, all within a 30 minute boat ride.

Venezuela Fishing Tours Los Roques

There are 4 or 5 great bars on the beach of Gran Roque, and a cocktail or beer at sunset propped up on a beanbag, watching the Pelicans, Turns and Seagulls dive continuously after bait fish with the occasional 100lb Tarpon working its way through the schools, is a must before the 7.30pm dinner call.

The fishing

Macabi (Bone Fish)

The bone fishing in Los Roques is sensational all year round. The guides will take you to all terrain from weed bed flats, to beach gutters using a range of shrimp, crab and minnow flies. The favourite amongst the locals is the Gummi Minnow which is the prevalent bait fish all over the islands.

The average weight is a massive 6lb’s and regular 10lb – 14lb fish are caught over a 5-day trip. 8 wt rods is minimum and 10-12lb tippet for the flats, and 20lb for the beaches is recommended.

Spin rodders will find it a little tougher on the flats for Macabi, but the beach gutters provide excellent sight casting to big bones. Soft plastic, rubber tail lures and feathered jig-heads are the best bet.

Venezuela Fishing Los Roques Bonefish Snook and TarponSabalo (Tarpon)

The Islands of Los Roques contain many hidden lagoons holding 50-100lb plus Tapron at the right tides. There are also shallower lagoons for wading that hold baby 5 – 25lb Tarpon that are great fun on light gear and good practice.

The beaches around the larger island offer very challenging shallow water Tarpon fishing, but beware of the sly Barracuda amongst them.

The best times of year are January thru June and 10wt rods should do, with leaders ranging from 100 to 20lb depending on the conditions. The usual Tarpon flies are applicable, but again the larger Gummi Minnows seem to be a treat for the local silver giants.

Snook

Los Roques offers amazing Snook fishing, some of the best in the Carribean, especially in the 5-15lb range although Snook up to 30lb have been landed. The lagoons are the go with the occasional school being spotted on the flats at high tide.

Bone fish gear is usually Ok, 8wts with 20lb leader, or 12lb if the conditions are still and bright. Flies or lures should consist of large feathers and soft plastics, but Snook tend to eat anything when they are on the bite.

Best time of year is January to June.

Other Species

Permit are abound in the Islands but very difficult to catch and not generally targeted by the guides. There is great Jack, Blue Runner, Mac Tuna and Wahoo fishing around the islands and drop-offs. Huge schools of Blue Runners and Tuna combine on the outgoing tide around the points and are taken off the beach with Clouser flies, Gummi minnows and shinny lures.

8 and 10wt will cover these fish and a solid spinning outfit with braided line for the reefs and mangroves.
